Understanding Your Choices
Patients have the right to control how their health information is used. Two key opt-out options exist in the NHS: the National Data Opt-Out and the Summary Care Record (SCR) Opt-Out. These serve different purposes and are managed differently.
1. National Data Opt-Out
Purpose: Prevents your confidential health information from being used for research and planning.
Does it affect your care? No. Your data will still be used for your treatment and care.
How to opt out:
- Online: Your NHS Data Matters
- NHS App: Your Health > Choose if data is shared for research and planning
- Phone: 0300 303 5678
- Post: Request a paper form via the NHS contact centre
Managed by: NHS England
2. Summary Care Record (SCR) Opt-Out
Purpose: Prevents your basic medical information (e.g. allergies, medications) from being shared with other healthcare professionals for direct care, especially in emergencies.
Does it affect your care? Yes. Opting out may limit access to vital information in urgent situations.
How to opt out:
- Complete a SCR opt-out form and submit it to your GP surgery.
Managed by: Your GP practice
